Gustaf Nilsson no longer training with Cercle Brugge first team
Gustaf Nilsson and Ludovit Reis are no longer training with Cercle Brugge first team. The Swedish striker has struggled to make an impact for the club. Nilsson, who was a surprise participant in the World Cup with Sweden, signed from Union St Gilloise two seasons ago but has yet to have any real impact up front for Cercle Brugge. Reis, a former Barcelona academy product, joined last summer from Hamburg but, due to injuries, fell out of favour and now it appears that Ivan Leko is wanting to go in a different direction.
Why is this important for Cercle Brugge?
It is not surprising that Nilsson is not part of the squad. Cercle Brugge had reportedly tried to sell him last season but were unable to find a buyer or a club that the Swedish striker was willing to join. Nilsson scored 27 goals in 93 games for Union St Gilloise after leaving Wehen Wiesbaden in the summer of 2022. He joined Cercle Brugge in 2024 but has only scored 11 goals in 53 games. After playing 42 games in his first season, Nilsson only played 11 games last season, failing to score.
What comes next?
Reis, a 26-year-old central midfielder, played only 12 games for Cercle Brugge last season. There will certainly be teams in Germany that will be happy to bring the former Barcelona academy product back to the Bundesliga or 2. Bundesliga.
