Cercle Brugge have secured the future of Viggo Martens by extending his contract until the summer of 2029. The 19-year-old attacking midfielder signed the new deal following a strong start to the season that saw him become a first-team regular.

Technical director Luciano Murchio expressed his delight at the agreement. "We are very happy that Viggo has extended his contract." Murchio said. He added: "He is a true professional who embodies the Cercle DNA and with his daily standards sets an example for the rest of the group."

Martens made the step up from Jong Cercle to the senior squad this summer. He made his debut on the opening matchday against Standard Liège and subsequently started five of the first seven league matches. His performances were rewarded with the Player of the Month award in both August and September 2026.

The extension comes at a time when Cercle Brugge are experiencing a difficult start to the Jupiler Pro League campaign. The team currently sits 17th with just three points from seven games. Their last five results read one draw and four defeats. The standings show a sixteen-point gap to leaders Union St. Gilloise.

The club, colloquially known as Groen-Zwart, signed Martens from KAA Gent in the summer of 2024. In his first season he won the title with the U18s. Last season he scored five times in 26 appearances for Jong Cercle.

Martens will now look to maintain his form ahead of the next fixture. Cercle Brugge host Anderlecht, who are fifth, on 10 October. The full fixtures schedule is available on the site. His new contract runs for another two and a half years.
