Cercle Brugge have signed South African international Luke le Roux on a free transfer. The 26-year-old midfielder has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Belgian top-flight side.
The club confirmed the player's arrival yesterday. "Cercle Brugge confirmed the signing yesterday, announcing that the 26-year-old South African midfielder had joined the club as a free agent," the club said. Le Roux arrives from English side Portsmouth, where he signed a three-year contract last summer. His move from Sweden to Portsmouth was reported at the time as a club-record sale for IFK Värnamo.
The well-travelled player began his career in South Africa and has previously played in the Netherlands for FC Volendam and in Sweden for both Varbergs BoIS and Värnamo. He made his debut for the South African national team, Bafana Bafana, in 2022 and has since earned nine caps. For Cercle Brugge, he brings experience and physicality to a midfield that can use the reinforcement.
Cercle Brugge currently sit 15th in the Jupiler Pro League with three points from six matches. Their recent form shows no wins, with two draws and three defeats in their last five outings. The squad is in need of a boost, and the arrival of Le Roux addresses that need. The player himself hopes his time in Belgium will provide a platform for regular football and further progression in Europe.
Their next fixture is an away trip to fourth-placed Charleroi this Saturday. The full schedule for the coming weeks can be checked on our fixtures page. Le Roux's signing adds a new option to the squad, which fans can view on the squad page.
